West Coast Attitude.
Design: Spartan. Rebellious. Fun.
There’s a difference between the brew cultures of the East and West Coasts, and it’s not really what you’d expect.
Out West, innovation and rebellion are adorable and fun. They’re sun-kissed, a little puckish, fueled by laughter and a sh*t ton of hops.
Back East the brewers are angry muthaf*ckers intent on crushing, trashtalking, and throttling the life out of any joy that comes their way.
I went to a few tasting events and talked to folks about collabs, and it’s also clear there too: On the West Coast they collaborate. Back East they compete. And when they win they’re kinda assholes about it.
So while I love the East Coast, and will always come back to it, my heart is in the vats and brew houses of California. Because it’s fun to brew and sip and shoot the sh*t out there.
Loosen up, East Coast. Try a little daring, a little risk-taking, a little dreaming. And above all, lay off the ‘roid rage and have some fun with it, willya?
[If anyone knows the context for Calagione’s quote, let me know. I emailed Dogfish Head, but dog only knows what they’ll make of my query regarding a 5yo quote.]
